They were Conventions, now they're Festivals? – Comicsbeat
You and I may want panels about nichey comics topics but….they don’t play well in the big room. In theory the 15% culling should lead to a banger after banger after banger line up of panels. And yet, just doing things that are popular result in an inevitable flattening and lack of surprise in the experience...."
The problem repeats itself in just about every area of the comic book community: the hobby wants "normie" money but not the "normie tastes" which do not really reflect the hobby with all its permutations and interests.

Retcon with "Ms. Marvel is being injected into the history of the X-Men" gets strong reaction – Cosmicbook
50% of retail shops have already closed. They’ve already replaced your favorite characters and wiped out decades worth of stories from legendary creators. It’s on YOU. Retailers need to stop pre-ordering and tell Marvel they don’t want this shit. Fans need to leave Marvel on the shelf. Supporting this shit means supporting the downfall of comics...."

Using DC's Abosolute series to "save Shazam" – CBR MSN
DC's most recent Shazam comic book was launched in May 2023, with the book intended to take the character back to his roots to some level. Eschewing the New 52 trait of actually calling him Shazam, writer Mark Waid compromised and began calling him "The Captain." Likewise, while the characters and premise that Geoff Johns introduced in the New 52 reboot of the hero were still there, the status quo was more traditional, even bringing back the setting of Fawcett City..."

How comic book shops are strategizing to keep customers coming back – Publishers Weekly
According to the latest ICv2 industry report, of the $1.87 billion in comics and graphic novel sales in 2023, 61% are from book channels, while 36% are via the direct market, which comprises approximately 3,000 specialty comics retailers. Indications are that specialty shops’ share rose in 2024, which was “a pretty good year in comic stores,” reports Milton Griepp, president of ICv2, which did not release full figures by press time..."
Can 3,000 "specialty shops" be an accurate number? That averages 60 shops per state in the USA, and clearly for many states even ten shops is pushing it. Obviously, other locations such as urban areas are going to support a higher number of shops, but still 3,000 shops that bring in "new" books every month seems like a very optimistic number, which is to say, I suspect the "real" number is half. For comparison, there are 653 Barnes & Noble bookstores in the entire country. For more comparison there are roughly 2,000 "independent" bookstores in the USA, and some 6,000 used bookstores [source: Chat GPT].
