Fast review: Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Humor plus sword & sorcery
A good deal of humor lubricates Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, courtesy of the cast and script, and though the tale is engineered out of many other films (Guardians of the Galaxy, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter), it has an earnest need to keep moving and to tell it's story efficiently.
A band of mediocre thieves have to up their game when trying to overcome one of their own, a con-artist (played by Hugh Grant) who is now ruling a kingdom while backed up by another ex-pal, the powerful "Red Wizard" Sofina, played by Daisy Head.
Chris Pine is a lute-playing hero who is trying to get his daughter back from the "helpful" con-man who took over the child when the lute-player ended up in prison when a past heist went sideways. The axe-wielding Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) is another former pal who pummels the bad guys (there's a lot of them) and Justice Smith is a second-rate wizard who gets pulled out of his failing magic show to help them overcome their insurmountable opponents. The final member of their troupe is the shape-shifting Doric (Sophia Lillis) who is actually loath to help humans. The group travels across a fantasy landscape fighting henchman of the ruler, obese dragons, chasms, and their own flagging confidence.
Originality is compromised by how many other past movies Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is cribbed from (and gives the title a certain sort of self-deprecating humor, probably not intended), but the cast and script have a lot of energy and carry the quest, however familiar parts of it seem, to the finish line.
