UNCLE SCROOGE

"The Richest Duck in the World"

Carl Barks invented Uncle Scrooge for the 1947 story "Christmas on Bear Mountain," which appeared in Four Color Comics #178* (published by Dell). In the tale, Donald Duck and his nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie are 'tested' to see if they are worthy to inherit Uncle Scrooge's wealth.

Subsequent tales in various issues of Donald Duck comics proved popular, culminating in Uncle Scrooge as the lead character in the tale "Only A Poor Old Man" in Four Color #386 (1952). The first issue of Uncle Scrooge as its own series was the December 1953 issue #1.

*Dell published "Four Color Comics" as an anthology series that had well over 1,000 issues, with sometimes multiple issues appearing in a single month. The last issue #1354 appeared in 1962.
