Ninja Teenage Turtles Out of the Shadows

June 6, 2016

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows took the #1 spot across America over the past weekend, followed directly behind with X-Men: Apocalypse.

Even though out in front with a $35 million dollar haul (domestic American market), the problem for Paramount is that this sequel has opened with down numbers compared with the $65 million the first film in the reboot gained in 2016 when it premiered. Unless good word of mouth helps to lift the chances of Ninja Turtles 2, the film is tracking to finalize below $100 million for its domestic American market run. I'm sure Paramount had higher hopes when they moved forward on this sequel. The general rule in the superhero sequel business is the next one in the series is supposed to build the audience outward, not inward (case in point for building out: the Nolan Batman/Dark Knight films, each film gross topped the previous one.)

"Paramount's Ninja Turtles 2 brought in an estimated $35.25 million, which, as discussed in our weekend preview, puts the film pretty much right on the average for so many of today's sequels based on the original film's performance. In the case of Ninja Turtles, this is a 46% drop from the 2014 film's $65.5 million opening. Considering the $135 million budget for Turtles 2 is $10 million more than was spent on the original, that's not exactly what the studio was hoping for when they flipped the green light. The sequel is now looking to bring in $90 million or so domestically, which is around $100 million less than the original. Of course, box office grosses are just half the story with a film like this as ancillary merchandise is a big revenue driver for a film of this sort." Box Office Mojo

Meanwhile, there are a total of 5 superhero films currently in theatre release: Deadpool, though already out on home video, is still limping along in theatre release and has now pulled in front of Guardians of the Universe in worldwide gross (Deadpool $772.376 vs $772.152 for Guardians). Captain America III has piled on significantly more ($1,132,078,636 billion total) cash, and Batman V Superman is still out there, too, and has picked up a few more hundred thousand to now sit at $872,208,388 in total worldwide gross.
