Sword wielding adventurer that has teamed with Conan the Barbarian on occasion. Indirectly created by Robert Howard, Conan's inventor, who had a character known as Red Sonya, who was then transposed from Howard's short story Shadow of the Vulture to the Conan comic book stories and renamed Red Sonja. This maneuver was managed by writer Roy Thomas who was the author and Howard-adapter for the early run of Marvel Comics' Conan stories.
Red Sonja's first appearance was in Conan the Barbarian #23, February 1973 from Marvel Comics with Barry Smith artwork.
Roy Thomas partially based his version of the character not only on Red Sonya but also on Howard's other "sword woman" named Agnes de Chastillon (aka Dark Agnes de la Fere) who was featured in a series of three tales by Howard: Sword Woman, Blades for France, and the incomplete Mistress of Death.
