Tite Kubo's highly expressive artwork conveys the cathartic elements of his Bleach storyline. Abundant crosshatching is used throughout the extended storyline of Bleach, and is a commonly used technique in the black and white world of Japanese manga, though it has become somewhat passé in mainstream American comic books. (There are many exceptions, of course. In particular there is the rigid precision of Joe Sacco.)
