Jonah Hex issue #32 by Rich Corben

Published by DC Comics July 2008 cover date

Richard Corben always brings a depth and black-inky theatrical sense to his mainstream comic book covers. This cover for DC Comics' Jonah Hex is no different. Corben tones down the Jokeresque face effects many of DC Comics' artists have tried for in the last few years, making Jonah reasonably mangled, but still human. Corben handles hands and fingers a particular way in his black and white inking, it reminds me of the near abstraction Jack Kirby had veered into. A hand was more than just fingers, but something like a hammer, a block of energy, a retreat from anatomy toward iconography.
