Hobbit Battle of Five Armies at $804.2 million

Hobbit Battle Five Armies

Jan 20, 2015: After 34 days in release, The Hobbit Battle of the Five Armies now stands at Worldwide: $804,256,417 worldwide. As of now, Battle is about $150 million under total earnings for the previous film, Desolation of Smaug, which had a 126 day run, so there's plenty of time left for Battle of Five Armies to catch up and go past. If Battle comes in around the same numbers as Smaug, that puts the three film Hobbit franchise at nearly 2.7 billion dollars in total earnings. (That number only adds together theatrical run earnings. Ancillary earnings on toys, DVDs, etc are not included.)

Peter Jackson's final chapter in the Hobbit Trilogy is a return to peak form, without the slow and wandering segments that appeared in the second chapter, The Desolation of Smaug.

The armies of the film title refer to the number of forces that gather around The Lonely Mountain once Smaug the dragon is out of the way, and everyone has a claim on the vast Uncle Scrooge-sized treasure that's piled up inside the fabled mountain overlooking the human enclave of Laketown.

Richard Armitage returns as Thorin Oakenshield, the dwarf leader that has finally completed the difficult quest of recapturing the family estate, but the treasure has turned his mind into a chamber of jealousies, fears, and rage, and as the various armies form up outside of the mountain, he seems determined to lead his dwarves in an impossible attempt to defeat the tens of thousands of soldiers outside their walls all by themselves.

Jackson's spectacle has a numberless elf, dwarf and orc battle sequence that stretches out over a great deal of the film, with isolated battles featuring the main characters. Particularly well done is the final confrontation between Azog the Defiler and Oakenshield.
