Mini-review: Guardians II plays it safe

Marvel Studios is quite careful with Vol.2, not shaking up the way they presented the first Guardians of the Galaxy, unspooling the story and visuals in the same manner, repeating the basic film in a number of ways but still advancing the characters slightly deeper into Marvel Comics historiography.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is not a complete cash-run or victory lap, but nothing as surprising as the invention of the first film. Kurt Russell appears with Gabby Hayes whiskers and fills in some of Star-Lord's backstory (we already know the reveal before the script gets down to business: he's Peter Quill's dad, named Ego), and Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and sister (Karen Gillan as Nebula) work on their family friction (they battle but make-up). Groot grows back a bit from his defoliation from the previous adventure. Rocket Raccoon fares a bit worse in Vol. 2 though the smart-alec dialogue is as plentiful as before.

In general, film acts as an entertaining bridge toward the eventual third sequal.
