Dr Strange - Cumberbatch

December 13, 2016 - Dr. Strange continues to pile on new revenues. If the film can stay through the crowded holiday season it could eclipse DC's Man of Steel, which might be further evidence of how things stand vis-a-vis Marvel and DC Comics at the cineplex, that is, probably the world's best known superhero (Superman) is bested by a second tier Marvel character. Cumberbatch's film is well-done, but it doesn't break any mold and fits neatly into the ongoing Marvel Movie cycle. Zach Snyder's Man of Steel was meant to be a game changer for DC (in 2013), as was Batman V Superman, which also failed to break into the billion-dollar superhero movie club (only DC's Dark Knight films from Chris Nolan have thus far done so, all the other billion-dollar superhero movies are Marvel characters)

Dr. Cumberbatch at $574 Million

Doctor Strange Cumberbatch

After 2 weeks in release, Marvel Entertainment's $165 million dollar production of Dr. Strange has grossed past the half-billion dollar mark. More or less staying true to the mechanics of Steve Ditko's 1963 origin of the character (Strange Tales #110), star Benedict Cumberbatch has managed to match the physical appearance of the mystical doctor, and the film in general keeps with Ditko's quasi-Lovecraftian synthesis of old movie serial magician adventurers (like Chandu the Magician, mentioned by Stan Lee as a model for the character*) with superheroes. Antecedents for the character also include golden age comic book heroes like Dr. Midnight, Dr. Fate, Ibis the Invincible, and those in turn partially drew off of the pulp-age character Doc Savage.

The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses - Amazon

These three screen adaptations, Henry VI in two parts and Richard III, tell the story of The Wars of the Roses, an exceptionally turbulent period in British history. Shakespeare's plays are filmed in the visually breathtaking landscape and architecture of the period. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Hugh Bonneville, Judi Dench, Michael Gambon, Sally Hawkins, Sophie Okonedo & Tom Sturridge, these exhilarating and emotionally charged films feature some of Shakespeare's most eloquent and powerful language.
