Teenage malaise takes a horrible turn for the worse when Light Yagami, student and bored dabbler in life, finds a small notebook which he soons discovers to his increasing delight is a way to murder people (he starts off concentrating only on dangerous criminals) by simply entering their names into the volume and they soon expire. The note book belongs to Ryuk, a death-angel (or "death god" or "Shinigami") who hardly functions as a dedicated reaper, but is instead a bored and dysfunctional supernatural being who is amused by Light's growing obsession with the Death Note.
