Origin of Captain America
Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created Steve Rogers for Captain America Comics #1 (cover dated March 1941) for Timely Comics, the forerunner of Marvel Comics.
Martin Goodman (the owner of Timely) saw the sales on The Shield (first appearance in Pep Comics, Jan 1940, published by MLJ, later to be known as Archie Comics), and when writer Joe Simon suggested competing with that stars-and-stripes costumed hero with his own idea for a similar suit but with the name Captain America, Martin said go ahead, agreeing to (according to Simon) a profit-sharing scheme that would give 15% to the writer (Simon) and 10% to the artist (yet to be named).
Simon had been working on stories with Jack Kirby, but was intending to develop his Captain America idea with artist Al Avison or Al Gabriel, depending upon which was free to take more work. Kirby heard Simon's plan and wanted to be involved, even though he was already overloaded with multiple projects.
However, once John Goldwater at MLJ/Archie saw Captain America, he threatened a lawsuit, and Kirby hastily redesigned Captain America's shield into a round disc away from the traditional knights-shield that MLJ's The Shield used.
